We Need Balanced Reform of America’s Chemical Safety Laws

I am writing you today to strongly encourage you to work toward balanced, comprehensive reform of our nation's chemical safety laws.  As you and other Members of Congress seek to update or replace the Toxic Substances Control Act, please keep in mind that any reform of our chemical safety laws should protect public health, preserve American jobs and innovation, and promote new, "green" chemicals that will safeguard our planet for generations to come.

Since it was enacted in 1976, the Toxic Substances Control Act has been a point of contention among industry representatives, environmental groups, consumer organizations, and others.  Its effectiveness at protecting the public from the threat of toxic chemicals in consumer products has been called into question time and time again.  Now, with scientific breakthroughs that allow us to more accurately detect and understand the impact chemicals have on the human body and the environment, there is little disagreement that the Act provides insufficient protection to ensure public health.

Now, many state and local governments have taken it upon themselves to pass restrictions on certain chemicals.  While this may represent small steps toward advancing consumer protection, this piecemeal approach ultimately does little to ensure overall public health, and it creates significant confusion regarding the allowance of certain chemicals from region to region.

We need balanced, comprehensive reform of our chemical safety laws at the federal level in order to ensure a better future for ourselves and our children.  As you work to accomplish this goal, please support reforms that protect our children and families, encourage American innovation and job growth, and preserve the environmental health of our planet.
